This spotlight is on Elizabeth Harrin and this is her story...
I’m a project management blogger, author and mentor. I help project managers and their teams get work done with less stress.
I wanted to create a course to teach something I felt more people needed to know, and I really struggled to get the course set up in WordPress using an LMS plugin. It bothered me because I’m quite proficient at using WordPress, having blogged at GirlsGuideToPM.com for over 10 years – I started out learning CSS so that I could edit my own theme – there were no visual page builders back then!
I hired a developer to help me build out my course platform. He couldn’t get it to work correctly either, and in the end I felt like I was just wasting money.
Then I found Teachery.
I loved how easy it was to create content in Teachery. It was customizable enough to get it looking good and professional without it taking an age to do. My business keeps me busy enough as it is and I didn’t have enough time to spend hours tinkering.
The Teachery templates got me up and running quickly. I loved the course I had made and was excited to get it out into the world.
Unfortunately, my course itself tanked.
It turned out that no one wanted to learn about project management reporting. I’d built an amazing product on a subject everyone thought was… well, a bit dull, I expect.
Still, the experience of building and running a course on Teachery made it much easier for me to be awesome for my next course. And I did a ton of market research, course validation calls and testing to ensure it was something people would love as much as me.
I launched my live Stakeholder Management Masterclass earlier this year. It was built on Teachery but taught live each week over 4 weeks through a webinar platform.
Students got access to all the bonus material, the template library, documentation and course goodies from Day 1. Each week those who could joined the live webinar. Then I posted the video in Teachery for those who couldn’t make the live session.
As the course was live I could adapt the material to really suit the needs of the managers on the course. It was easy to create more bonus modules in Teachery on the fly: for example, I recorded several live Q&A and I created an archive of those videos.
The feedback I got from the delegates was really good. I plan on running the course again next year, with two levels of access: one to pre-recorded content and one with live Q&A and personalised coaching. I know I can easily duplicate the course in Teachery so the set up should be easy.
I’m really looking forward to the course next year. With the feedback and experience I’ve gained this year I think it’s going to be really good.
